Tourism texts deal with leisure activities, holidays, sports, public holidays and tourist attractions amongst other subjects. There is a cross-over between tourism and marketing texts in that the aim is often, as in marketing, to attract the reader's attention and then make a sale.
The language used in tourism texts is frequently informal or colloquial. While this generally means less technical terms than in other types of translation, the type of expression does have to be just right in the target language. The place where the final text is going to be published websites, brochures, newspapers can also make a difference in this sense.
Another possible dilemma with tourism texts is the use of local names and contractions in source texts. This can mean that we ask the customer for a decision on certain terms after researching them: sometimes more than one possibility is valid, so it may be a matter of personal preference in the end. Whether to translate certain names (for example, the names of buildings) and items on a menu can also be a customer preference in the end.
