When is a good translation not a good translation?

Getting critical terminology right is one of the most difficult aspects of any translation project. Failure to use the right terminology can have serious consequences, causing confusion, damage to valuable brands and delays in critical projects.

  • Let's take an example: how would you translate "e-book" into French? The accepted translation is "livre électronique"; however, most IT companies choose not to translate the term, and hence "e-book" is now more widely used in France. " livre électronique " is a good translation, but not if you have used "e-book" in all your previous translations.

The aatranslations terminology process allows us to quickly and accurately focus on critical terminology and ensure that it gets special attention.

Getting terminology right involves two steps:

  • Making sure the translated term is correct in the context of the specific industrial sector, target group or market.
  • Ensuring consistency with previous texts, maintaining the use of the selected term across different documents for different departments in the organization.

We extract and validate items of terminology before beginning the translation project and, working closely with you, pre-translate the terminology.

Once all the terminology has been translated, we store it on our terminology server.

Our translators then translate your texts within the SDLX platform. The translator is automatically prompted to use the pre-translated terminology stored in the server whenever a pre-translated term appears in the original text.

This focused and careful approach ensures that critical terminology is translated correctly and then used in a consistent way across a series of translations.

The terminology process takes additional time and effort, so does cost a little more and require some extra time. However, if your text contains critical terminology the extra effort invested will ensure that your translation uses accurate, appropriate and consistent terminology in each target language.
